China Painting dates back hundreds of years and is done on the surface of a previously glazed and finished fired white porcelain blank. There are two primary types of material used in the art of China Painting. The most common is referred to as China Paint or Porcelain Paint and the other is Luster. Each requires a different approach not only in application technique but also in firing temperature.

There are supplamental materials that can be used with both of the primary materials making an almost endless variety of effects availible to the china artist. The gold body, background, banding, borders and/or pen work is actual gold, 14 to 24 karat, applied by hand and also fired in the kiln to specific temperature. Therefore any one piece will have gone through a series of applications and firings to acheive the depth of color and finish desired. China Painting is fasinating while at the same time being a very labor intensive form of artistic expression.
